The entrance examination is an important pathway for the enrollment of foreign undergraduate students at Peking University. It aims to attract more high-quality international students to study at Peking University and to cultivate innovative and leading talents with a foundation in Peking University, a passion for China, and an international perspective.
The duration of study for foreign undergraduate students at Peking University is 4-6 years. Upon completing the prescribed training program and passing the thesis defense, students will receive a graduation certificate. Those who meet the requirements for a bachelor’s degree will be awarded one.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicants must be non-Chinese citizens holding a valid foreign passport and comply with the relevant regulations of the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China. In principle, applicants should be between 18 and 25 years old (calculated from September 1, 2006), and in good physical and mental health. Applicants should have completed high school education or above, with excellent academic and conduct records, be friendly towards China, and have no criminal record.
- According to the Nationality Law of the People’s Republic of China and regulations of the Ministry of Education, those born with foreign nationality to parents, either both or one of whom are Chinese citizens settled abroad, and do not hold Chinese nationality, should have held a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate before April 30, 2020. They must also have resided abroad for more than 2 years between April 30, 2020, and April 30, 2024 (9 months of actual residence in a year can be counted as one year, based on entry and exit stamps).
- As per the regulations of the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, residents from mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and Taiwan region who have immigrated and obtained foreign nationality must have held a valid foreign passport or nationality certificate before April 30, 2020, possess proof of having renounced Chinese nationality, and have lived abroad for more than 2 years from April 30, 2020, to April 30, 2024.
Note: Whether an applicant holds Chinese nationality along with foreign nationality will be determined by the nationality recognition conclusion of the entry-exit administration department of the Chinese public security authorities. If an applicant is found to have Chinese nationality during the application, admission process, or after enrollment, their application, admission, and enrollment qualifications will be revoked or corresponding actions will be taken.
Application Materials
- Peking University Application Form for Foreign Undergraduate Students (download and print after online registration), with a 2-inch color photo with a white background attached to the form.
- High school diploma (prospective graduates can provide a graduation forecast certificate), either the original or a notarized copy, in Chinese or English.
- High school transcript, either the original or a notarized copy, in Chinese or English.
- Personal statement in the original, in Chinese or English.
- Copy of the information page of the passport, which must be a valid ordinary passport.
- Award certificates and relevant supporting documents (if any).
- Birth certificate and nationality proof documents of both parents at the time of the applicant’s birth, including proof of foreign permanent residency obtained.
- Peking University Commitment Letter for Foreign Undergraduate Students (download the commitment letter template), which must be clearly and completely filled out and signed by hand in the PDF version. Applications without a commitment letter will not be processed.
- Applicants must upload a self-introduction video in the online application system (download recording and uploading requirements).
- Other supplementary materials required by Peking University.
Application Process
- Online application. Applicants should log in to Peking University’s online application system for international students (website: http://www.studyatpku.com), select “Degree Students”, enter “Undergraduate Students by Examination”, fill in the application information and upload relevant materials. The system is open from January 1, 2024, 00:00 to March 1, 2024, 23:59 (Beijing time), based on the time of the applicant’s first information submission.
- Pay the application fee. After submitting the online application, the fee must be paid. The preliminary review results can be checked within 1-10 working days after the application and payment of the fee. The application will not be reviewed without payment.
- Mail paper application materials. Paper materials are only accepted by mail, not in person. Mailing time: February 23, 2024, to March 8, 2024. The time of mailing is based on the postmark of the local post office. For timely delivery, it is recommended to use China Post EMS or SF Express for domestic mailings. Mailing address can be found in the contact details of the International Students Office.
Application materials will not be returned. Incomplete applications will not be processed.
- Preliminary Examination. After the paper materials are reviewed, applicants can participate in the preliminary examination. Subjects: Chinese, English, Mathematics. The preliminary examination will be held in mid-March 2024, with details in the preliminary examination notice.
- Re-examination. Those who pass the preliminary examination can participate in the re-examination, which will be held in late March 2024, with details in the re-examination notice.
- Admission. Those who pass both the preliminary and re-examinations will be admitted. The list of candidates for the preliminary examination, re-examination, and admission results can be queried through the online application system. After admission, the school will continue to verify applicant information and materials. If any violation or falsification is found, the admission will be immediately revoked.
- Enrollment. Admission materials will be issued in June-July 2024. Students should enroll in September 2024 with the admission notice and other relevant documents. Specific arrangements will be provided in the enrollment notice.
Violation Handling
Applicants must ensure that all application information and materials are true, compliant, and complete. Any dishonesty, violation of rules, or fraud found during the application, admission process, or after enrollment will lead to the revocation of application, admission, and enrollment qualifications or corresponding actions.

Related Costs
- Application fee: 800 RMB, paid online at the time of application. The fee is non-refundable.
- Tuition fee: Science and engineering: 30,000 RMB/year; Humanities and social sciences: 26,000 RMB/year.
Tuition fees are only accepted in RMB cash, UnionPay card, or online payment. Other currencies, traveler’s checks, and other payment methods are not accepted.
Scholarships for International Students
Students can apply for the “Peking University Scholarship for International Students” and “Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students” before enrollment. The “Peking University Scholarship for International Students” includes tuition, living expenses, and medical insurance fees, and awardees must participate in annual reviews. The “Beijing Municipal Government Scholarship for International Students” covers part of the tuition fee, and awardees must participate in annual reviews. Details will be provided in the email notification after admission.
Medical Insurance
Students must purchase comprehensive medical insurance for international students in China from a Chinese insurance company. Those who do not purchase insurance as required will not be processed for registration.
Accommodation
Students are responsible for arranging their accommodation during their study period, except for Chinese government scholarship students.

Those living off-campus must register with the local public security authorities within 24 hours of moving in.
Visa
Students should apply for an X1 visa to China at a Chinese embassy or consulate abroad with the “Admission Notice” and “Visa Application for Study in China (JW201/202 form)”. Within 30 days of entering China, the X1 visa must be converted to a study residence permit.
