Peking University is a comprehensive research university with disciplines such as philosophy, economics, law, education, literature, history, science, engineering, medicine, management, and art. Our school adopts the “application-assessment” selection method to recruit foreign students (hereinafter referred to as international students) to study for master’s and doctoral degrees.
Our school’s postgraduate admissions process for international students adheres to the principles of “fairness and fairness, comprehensive measurement, comprehensive evaluation, and merit-based admissions” and is committed to cultivating innovative and leading talents with Peking University heritage, Chinese feelings, and international vision. This admissions brochure is for Peking University Yanyuan Campus, New Campus, School of Software and Microelectronics (Daxing) and Shenzhen Graduate School (Shenzhen) (hereinafter referred to as the main campus). 1. Admissions majors
For details about departments, majors, teaching languages and other relevant information for the 2024 admissions to the main campus, please refer to the “Peking University 2024 Master/Doctoral Admissions Major Catalog (International Students at the Main Campus)”.
2. Learning methods and years of study
The study modes for master’s and doctoral students at Peking University are divided into full-time and part-time. For details on the learning methods of each major and research direction, please refer to the “Peking University 2024 Master/Doctoral Admissions Major Catalog (International Students at the Campus)”.
Unless there are special instructions in the admissions-related colleges (departments, institutes, institutes) (hereinafter referred to as departments) or projects, the academic duration for master’s degree students is 2 or 3 years, and the academic duration for doctoral students is 4 years. A bachelor’s degree is required. The length of study for those who directly pursue a doctoral degree is generally 5 years.
3. Application conditions
- Non-Chinese citizens holding foreign passports. For residents of Mainland China (Mainland), Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan who have immigrated and obtained foreign nationality and applied as foreign students, they should hold a valid foreign passport or nationality certification document before April 30, 2018. And have proof that the Chinese nationality has been cancelled.
- Note: Whether the applicant has foreign nationality and also has the nationality of the People’s Republic of China shall be subject to the nationality determination conclusion of the Exit-Entry Administration Department of the Chinese Public Security Bureau. If you are found to have Chinese nationality after application, admission and admission, your application qualifications, admission qualifications, admission qualifications or student status will be cancelled.
- Be physically and mentally healthy, friendly to China, and of good conduct. No criminal record.
- Graduate students applying for a master’s degree must have a bachelor’s degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China (skipping or transferring classes during the undergraduate period is not accepted); Master of Public Administration, Master of Business Administration, Executive Master of Business Administration, Master of Laws, etc. The special application conditions for individual professional degrees are implemented with reference to the “2024 National Master’s Degree Admissions Management Regulations” by the Ministry of Education of China.
- Graduate students applying for doctoral studies must have a master’s degree awarded by an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China. Science and engineering majors accept outstanding bachelor’s degree holders to apply directly for doctoral studies.
- Applicants’ academic performance, language proficiency, etc. must meet the admission requirements of the major they are applying for.
4. Application time (Beijing time)
First application batch: October 16, 2023 to December 15, 2023
Second application batch: January 1, 2024 to January 31, 2024
Note: Please see the corresponding admission brochure for the application deadline for each English-taught master’s program. The application deadline for English-taught doctoral programs is February 28, 2024.
5. Application method
Log in to the Peking University International Student Online Application System (website: http://www.studyatpku.com) to fill out the application and upload the following application materials:
- Original degree certificate and degree certification report, in Chinese or English. If the degree certificate is a document in another language, the original and a notarized Chinese or English translation must be uploaded at the same time. Applicants who have obtained degree certificates from foreign (overseas) universities must, in principle, submit a degree certification report from the Study Abroad Service Center of the Ministry of Education of China. Applicants who have obtained degree certificates from universities in mainland China must in principle submit a degree certification report from the China Higher Education Student Information Network (Xuexin.com).
Note: Applicants who have graduated must, in principle, submit a degree certificate certification report when applying. Fresh graduates must submit the original copy of their expected graduation certificate or enrollment certificate when applying. After being admitted, they must submit additional academic and degree certificates before enrolling, and bring the required original degree certificate with them when registering for the school to review their admission qualifications.
- Original or notarized copy of the official transcript from the school where you graduated, in Chinese or English.
- Original personal statement. Use the teaching language of the program you are applying for to briefly introduce your personal academic background and focus on your research plan during your graduate studies. - Two letters of recommendation in Chinese or English from professors or associate professors (or experts with equivalent professional and technical titles) in the field of application. The recommender will receive an email from the system after the applicant submits the application. They can complete the online recommendation according to the system instructions or upload a scanned copy of the recommendation letter signed by the recommender. - Original language (Chinese or English) test score sheet:
(1) To apply for subjects taught in Chinese, you should submit transcripts or other relevant Chinese language proficiency certificates that meet the following standards.

Note: Those who take the new HSK level 7-9 exam can submit corresponding qualified score reports.
(2) Applicants for English-taught majors (projects) whose native language is not English must submit TOEFL (iBT, above 100 points) or GRE (over 315 points) transcripts or other certificates that reflect their English proficiency. For specific requirements on English proficiency and Chinese proficiency, please refer to the admissions brochures for each English-taught program.
- Passport home page. The passport must be an ordinary passport that is still valid within three months after admission.
- Personal research results. Table of contents and abstracts of published academic articles, other original research results (please provide if any), etc.
- Other supplementary documents required by the department.
Note: The originals of all the above certification materials must be submitted in color scanned copies clearly scanned by a scanner. Documents taken by mobile phones or cameras are not accepted.
6. Application fee
Each applicant can apply for up to two choices, and the application fee for each choice is RMB 800.
Applicants must pay the application fee online before the application deadline (pay online according to the prompts of the international student online application system). Only RMB payment is accepted, other currencies and traveler’s checks are not accepted. Application fees are non-refundable. If the uploaded materials are incomplete or the application fee is not successfully paid, the application will not be accepted.
7. Preliminary review and re-examination of materials
- The International Students Office will conduct a preliminary review of the applicant’s qualifications and transfer the application materials of those who pass the preliminary review to the Graduate Affairs Office of the department you are applying for.
- The department organizes an admissions expert group to comprehensively evaluate the materials submitted by the applicants and select the best applicants to participate in the re-examination.
- The re-examination is planned to be held from March to April 2024. The specific re-examination format, requirements and time schedule will be determined and announced by the department. Applicants should check relevant announcements on the department website in a timely manner. Members of the re-examination expert panel will independently score on-site to evaluate the applicant’s overall quality, academic foundation and training potential.

8. Result
- The Graduate Admissions Office will select the candidates to be admitted based on the re-examination scores determined by the department and comprehensive review.
- The departments will announce the list of proposed admissions before the end of May. Please pay close attention to the public information of the applying departments.
- Prospective students must submit or mail the downloaded and printed original application form and other original application materials (except degree certificates and letters of recommendation) to the International Students Office of Peking University before May 31, 2024.
- The International Students Office will confirm and notify students of the admission results, and plans to issue admission documents one after another in late June 2024.
- Enrollment
Freshmen are scheduled to register for admission in early September 2024 and go through the registration procedures. The specific time is subject to the admission notice. New students must bring the required original degree certificate when enrolling for the school to review their admission qualifications. Those who do not meet the admission requirements will be disqualified from admission.

- Scholarships
New international students can apply for the following three types of scholarships:
(1) Chinese Government Scholarship College Program: Tuition fees are waived, accommodation fees are waived, and medical insurance is provided. Living expenses are provided every month in accordance with national standards.
(2) Beijing Scholarship for Foreign Students: Tuition Subsidy.
(3) Peking University Foreign Student Scholarship: Tuition fees are waived and medical insurance is provided. Living expenses are provided every month in accordance with the standards stipulated by the school.
Note: The evaluation and issuance of scholarships are carried out in accordance with relevant national and school regulations. Relevant information can be found on the website of the International Students Office: www.isd.pku.edu.cn.
- Visa, medical insurance and accommodation
Admitted students must take their admission notice and study visa application form (JW201/202 form) to the Chinese embassy or consulate abroad to apply for a study visa in China. Those who study for more than 6 months must apply for an X1 visa. Within 30 days after arriving in China, they need to go to the International Students Office to change the X1 visa into a study-type residence permit.
The Chinese Ministry of Education stipulates that international students coming to China must purchase medical insurance in China. If you do not purchase the required medical insurance, the school will not process the registration procedures.
Except for international students admitted to some scholarship programs, other international students need to find their own accommodation. International students who live off campus must go to the local public security bureau to register within 24 hours of renting a house.
- Graduation and Degree Awarding
Upon expiration of the study period, students who have completed all the requirements stipulated in the training plan, have qualified grades, and passed the thesis defense will be allowed to graduate; after review and approval by the school’s degree evaluation committee, the corresponding degree will be awarded.
- Other matters
- Further information about the admissions departments, such as the basic information of the department, scientific research, tutor team, training and scholarships, etc., can be found on the website of the relevant department.
- Our school does not allow graduate students to hold two or more statuses at the same time.
- Applicants should promptly pay attention to relevant documents and notices issued and sent by our school and admissions departments. All consequences caused by the applicant’s negligence or other personal reasons shall be borne by the applicant himself.
- For specific matters such as admissions, scholarships, stipends, and accommodation for international postgraduate students in the Department of Medicine, please refer to its admissions brochure.
- Matters not covered shall be carried out in accordance with the relevant policies of the superiors and the school. If there are relevant new policies and new requirements, our school will release them in a timely manner.
